Shahid Minar was built in honor of 'Sir David Ochterlony' originally, who led his army to victory in the Nepalese War in the year 1812 to 1814. It is 48.15 meter tall monument and on the maidan, it was named Shahid Minar in the year 1969. The column is interesting combination of various architectural styles of Grecian pillar on the Egyptian plinth.

One can get best view from the top of the monument of the Maidan and Kolkata. One can get the permission to travel up this monument from the Police Headquarters. This monument was renamed after independence and in honor of the martyred freedom fighters. Shahid Minar now became one of the important landmarks in Kolkata city.
