The Indian Museum is located on Jawaharlal Nehru Road and it has named for it is indeed an eye-opener to the country's rich culture and civilization. Also known as the Asiatic Museum, it is the museum founded in 1814 and have two sections related to the archaeology and zoology.

The museum was originally build in 1870 and it is fine colonial building and have very impressive collection. The entrance hall has original Mauryan lion capitol, India's national symbol, and the archaeological gallery has the Barhut Gateway, a massive structure decorated with a bas-relief depicting the life of Buddha.

It also have collection of Pala statues and the art collection of fine pieces from Orissa and other many temples. It is one of the best examples of Buddhist Gandharan art, Buddha images and other sculptures. The art section with textile galleries is worth visiting.
