In 1756 just after the defeat, the British built the massive fort on Gobindapur, a village in Kolkata. This fort is also designed in order to be impregnable and octagonal near about in shape. It is of 500 meters. in diameter and very large, so as to house totally all the Europeans in this city, if any attack occurs on them.
This fort was built in 1773 by the British and it was named after William III King. It is now a days the headquarter of the Indian army's Eastern command. Also the water channeled to fill the wide moat from the river Hoogly and the jungle around it was cleared, which after wards became the maidan. The fort is in use today also and visitors are allowed inside only with the special permission.
