Significance

Lord Rama son of King Dasharatha and his consort Queen Kausalya. Rama is the 7th incarnation of Lord Vishnu. This festival is celebrated as the birth anniversary of Lord Rama. Legends also say that Lord Rama married Sita on this day itself.

Legends also say that when the havoc of demon Ravana was too much, then Lord Vishnu the organizer took the avatar of Lord Rama and came to protect the earth. His main aim was to protect the earth from the torture of Ravana. Ravana had a boon that he would never be killed by any god, so all the other gods on the heaven were helpless. Soon some of the gods realized that he can be killed by a human being. That was the time when lord Vishnu decided to take a birth of the Maryada Pushottam Rama as the son of King Dasharatha. People worship Lord Rama as a personification of a supreme human. He is recognized as a perfect son, great father, a powerful king, a good husband and ideal brother. He was true and faithful for all his subjects for his entire life. This is the reason why his birthday is celebrated with great joy all over India.

Celebration of Rama Navami

People fast on this day in order to offer respect to the lord Rama. There are puja's conducted in regards to all the Hindu religious in every part of the country. Most of the devotees prefer to take satvik food on this day, this is food without salt and some people like to go for a nirjal fast that is staying without drinking water for the day. People make a note to visit temple on this day and like to hear stories of Lord Rama. People sing bhanjans in which they praise lord Rama, his devoted wife Sita, loyal Brother Lakshman and one of his greatest devotee lord Hanuman.

In Ayodhya this festival there is a grand celebration of Rama Navami, as there are thousands of devotees gathering at this place to celebrate this festival.

There is a special Rathayatra, the huge Chariot procession, which is well-known as the Shobha yatras of lord Rama, Lakshman, Sita and Hanuman. During this Yatra people like to take a holy dip in the religious river of Sarayu. There are rath yatra conducted in many such other states also, such as in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and in Bihar.

Traditional food

On this auspicious occasion of the Rama Navami there are many traditional food that are prepared at home as follows jeera Aloo, cucumber chutney, kalakand, khattey karela, methi and palak pulav, moong dal usal and neer mor. This festival is a very important festival for all the Hindus which they celebrate with great devotion.
