Kumbh mela is largest religious fair which is known to human race. It takes place after every four years at Haridwar, The half Kumbh mela takes place after every six years at Prayag and Haridwar and the Purna that is complete Kumbh mela takes place after every 12 years at 4 places in India that is at Allahabad, Ujjain, Haridwar and Nasik.

There are more than 17 million people who visit this mela when ever it takes place. During this mela it makes the world's largest gathering place that makes a record in the history.

History of Kumbh mela

Kumbh mela takes place on the bank of the river Ganga. This mela takes place at different places; this is decided on the position of the Jupiter and sun. It takes place at Trimbakeshwar when the sun and the Jupiter are in the Leo sign of the Zodiac, in Haridwar when the sun is in the sign of Aries, at Haridwar when the only Jupiter is in the sign of Taurus. These places are decided in advance by calculating the position of the sun, Jupiter and the moon. Kumbh is a Sanskrit word which means kalasha, in Indian astrology it is one of the symbols of the zodiac sign that is Aquarius. This festival is also celebrated under the zodiac signs. Mela means gathering of people or to meet, it can also be fair.

Rituals of Kumbh mela

The major thing that has to be followed on this festival is the rituals bathing in the holy river Ganga. They are sounds of temples bells and mantras. This place is crowded with sadhus, yogis, rishis and devotees. These people are busy taking a holy dip in the river and following all the rituals. This mela breaks all the man made barriers of cast, area and the creed, all the people are welcome in the Kumbh mela without any restriction. There are many mythological events that take place on this day, which is the main reason that this mela has gained world popularity. This mela attracts thousands of people towards itself from all corners of the nation. This is considered as the most holy day in the Hindu tradition.

People consider that taking a divine dip in the river Ganga once in a life time will wash away all the sins for the entire life. So people take it as pleasure to have a bath in the Ganga during the Kumbh mela. During the mela the whole of Haridwar is crowded with people that have a colorful view of the area. As this mela is gaining popularity day by day the number of people visiting this place is increasing. The faith of the people is still the same for this mela, which has attracted and increased the curiosity of the foreigners. People visiting this place do a lot of charity for the poor for acquiring good merit from the good and thus ensuring their place in the heaven.
