Significance
Hanuman Jayanti is a very famous festival of Hindus and is a festival to celebrate hanuman's birth day. Lord Hanuman is regarded as deity of the divine power, knowledge and strength. He is considered as one of the 'param bhakt' of Lord Shri Rama. Lord Hanuman is the manifestation of Lord Shiva. He was the son of wind god Kesari and Mata Anjani born in the month of Chaitra, therefore is also well-known as "KESARI NANDAN" or "ANJANEYA".
Hanuman was the living incarnation of Lord Rama. He was considered as the true karma yogi, has worked vigorously and desirelessly. He was a Brahmachari for his entire life. Legend says that he was a great devotee of Lord Rama and he served him with true devotion and pure love. Hanuman served lord Rama and Sita mata to destroy the obstacles in organizing a kingdom for the welfare of the human begins. Hanuman was very gentle, brave, wise and humble. He had all the great qualities. He was an exceptionally great person, who had all the magical powers that nobody else had.
Hanuman had the quality to conquer the evil spirits. The great epic Ramayana would be incomplete if not mentioned about his great braveries. He was remembered for his fearless, modesty and selfless dedication to Lord Rama and Sita. Hanuman was the only god who cannot be troubled by any sort of negative energy.
Celebration of Hanuman Jayanti
Hanuman Jayanti is considered as a main festival of Hindus all over the country. Priests give bath to the idol of lord Hanuman and spread oil and sindoor all over the idol. There are especial prayers and Puja conducted on this day. Some people also recite Hanuman Chalisa for the whole day. This is an auspicious occasion for the Brahmachari, wrestlers and the body builders. There are special discourses that are held on this very day; even Prasad is distributed in the temple after the sunset.
In most of the temple, Hanuman is worshiped along with Lord Rama or individually. People are adviced to fast on this day or do meditation in honor of Lord Rama and his devotee Lord hanuman.
In Maharashtra state, this festival is celebrated on the full moon day of Hindu lunar month, Chaitra. There is a very special story about the birth day of Hanuman that is believed in some religions, that is Hanuman was born on the 14th day in the dark forth night in the month of Ashwin and in others it is believed that he was born on the full moon day of the month Chaitra.
In Tamil Nadu and Kerala state this festival is celebrated in the month of Maargazhi, it is believed that Anjani and Hanuman are born on the same nakshatra that is on the moola nakshatra that falls in the month of Maargazhi.
In Maharashtra it is said that Saturday is the fortunate day of Hanuman, while in other states of India it is believed that Tuesday and Wednesday are the fortunate day for Lord Hanuman.
Traditional food
The traditional dish cooked on this day is the mailagu vadai. This is one of the favorite dishes for Hanuman Jayanti and is prepared in every body's house during this festival.
Hanuman was not only known for his strength and energy but also his loyalty and faithfulness towards his Lord Rama and wife Sita Mata.
