Mythological significance

Guru Purnima is the day which is devoted to Gurus. The disciples offer respect and Puja to their guru. Mainly this festival is celebrated by the Buddhists as they honor Lord Buddha as their Guru, for he was the one who delivered his first lecture at Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh on this day. Hindus celebrate this day in honor of sage Vyasa.

Guru Purnima Festival

He is considered as the greatest guru during the ancient Hindu period. Guru Vyasa started writing on the Brahma Sutras on the Ashadh and ended writing on this day itself. This is the day when the student shows love and gratitude to their teachers by their hard-work. The Hindu ascetics and sanyasis are observed offering prayers.

On this day lord Krishna -dwaipyana Vyasa who is the author of Mahabharata was born on this day to Parashara and satyavati a fisher woman and therefore this day is also celebrated as the Vyasa Purnima. He did a deep study of the Vedas and collected all the information on the Vedic hymns. He was the one who divided Vedic hymns into four parts according to their uses in the sacrificial means. He taught this to his four main disciples - Vaisamapayana, Jaimini, Paila and Sumantu. Afterwards he did the editing and dividing to the Vedic hymns and therefore he was honored as the "Vyasa". Vyasa divided the Vedic hymns into four parts there are as follows Rig, Sama, Atharva and the Yajur.

The word Guru is taken from Sanskrit, in Sanskrit this word is divided into two such as 'Gu' means ignorance or darkness and 'Ru' means taking away; hence Guru means taking away the darkness. Therefore the person who removes obscurity of our ignorance is called as the 'guru'. A teacher is the only one person who can eliminate all our darkness, and guide us to a successful path of knowledge. Guru is the main pillar who makes the students foundation strong and lead to a great future ahead.

Guru not only teaches the true meaning of life but also teaches the way of living life in our today's competitive world. He is the one who guides and focuses on all the aspects of life. He teaches the true meaning of carrying ourselves in to the world of competitions.

Celebrations of Guru Purnima

There are puja's organized in many ashrams and institutes worshiping the Vyasa guru and their own respected teachers. There are special programmers organized by the students for their respected Guru's on the auspicious occasions.

Traditional food

Traditional food prepared on these occasions for the Puja are as follows Chakali, rava ladoo, Burfi, sweet rice and along with these there are lots of fruits. Guru should be worshiped as the deity of God is begin worshipped. There should be culture programmer and some entertainment programmers organized specially for the Gurus.
