Good Friday Festival

Significance

Good Friday is the Friday that comes before Easter Sunday. This day is celebrated as the day when Lord Jesus was crucified. This is very important day in the calendar for the Christians. On this day Lord Jesus sacrificed his life and all his pain and suffering are remembered on this day of Good Friday. Early the Christians used to celebrate only Easter day in church, but by the 4th century each day was established as holy day and in that comes the 'Good Friday'.

Good Friday falls within the Holy week and this is a time for fasting and apologizing. For Christians it is not just chronological event, but a period to remember sacrifice of Lord Jesus. On this day the Christians remember the pain, the humiliation and the feeling of sorrow that Lord Jesus had to undergo. The message of Good Friday is the saying 'an eye for an eye' will not work. The only way to finish evil is through good deeds. The same way as the violence can be finished only by non-violence and love can conquer hatred.

People fast on this day and pray as this day is devoted to Lord Jesus. In churches there are no mass and only prayers are carried out early in the morning. There is a wooden piece that has a cross shape and legends say that lord Jesus had died on this cross. People come to pray in front of the cross and then kiss that cross. In many churches Christians celebrates Good Friday with passive service, the celebration starts in the evening. The Christ's death is remembered with prayers, prayers of thanksgiving, solemn hymns and there are messages that are focused on Christ.

Celebration of Good Friday

From 100 C.E this day is been observed as a fasting day, this is not associated with Jesus 'Death'. There are prayers and messages that are related to the suffering of Lord Jesus. There are no mass held on this day. There is regular Thursday mass held in the church. Some people believe 'Good' in Good Friday is related to 'God' and another belief is that 'Good' indicates the gift that is brought by the martyrdom.
