Krishna is one of the famous avatars of God Vishnu and this glorious god is the son of raja Vasudeva and his wife Devaki. Gokul Ashtami is actually a birthday of Lord Krishna and it always celebrated on the eighth day of the dark half of the month of Bhadrapada which comes in August or September mainly.
It is one of the great Hindu festival celebrated each year as the Lord Krishna was born at midnight. Many keep full day fast on this day and broke at midnight. This day is also known as 'Krishna Jayanti', 'Janma Ashtami' and 'Krishnaashtami'.
The festival is actually a community celebration and many people visit Krishna temples, decorated on this holy day specially. Gokulashtami is the day when kids form human pyramid to reach the 'mataka' a pot full of curds and break it, just like krishna did in his childhood.
Sometime before midnight many devotees gather in the temple and participate in the 'Arati' to relive the birth of god Krishna and in this way gokulashtmi is celebrated all over in India.
