Significance
Eid-Milad is celebrated on the 12th day of Rabi-ul-Awwal which is the third month according to the Islamic calendar. This is celebrated as the day when Prophet Muhammad was born and also to commemorate his death anniversary. The word 'Barah' in Arabic means 12 this signifies that it was the 12th day of Prophet Muhammad's sickness.
On this auspicious day the learned persons address some information about the life style of Prophet Muhammad in mosque and information on his noble deeds for humanity. They also tell stories about the pain and the suffering he faced during his time. There is a celebration called as the sandal rite, this is conducted on the footprints of the Muhammad that are carved on a stone. Next to the footprints there is a horse called as Buraq, on this horse Muhammad had traveled to heaven. This horse is decorated with sandal past or with the scented powder.
Prophet Muhammad was the son of Abdulla and grandson of Abdul Muttalib; they is one of the tribe of Qureysh. He was born in Mecca about 53 years before Hijrah in 570 A.D. Prophet Muhammad for some time was at the service of a wealthy widow Khadija. Later they got married and lived happily, though Khadija was 15 years elder to Prophet Muhammad.
Muhammad began to receive revelation sent to him from Allah in about 610 A.D. This revelation was sent through the angle named Gabriel. He formed a small community, but they were ill-treated by the people of Mecca. After this he along with his followers migrated to Medina in 622 A.D. In medina he was not just a leader of Muslim religion but was honored as the ruler of that city. This fight that took place from Mecca to Medina which he and his followers had to face is known as the Hijrah and is known as the beginning of the Islamic year. After listing and believing in this teaching there were more and more Arabian tribes who accepted Islam as religion. Muhammad went on a pilgrimage again to Mecca and this time there were thousands of his followers, there he preached his farewell lecture and left the world forever.
Celebration of Eid-Milad
On this day there is huge procession on the streets. In this procession there are nats that are sung by the scholars and along with these scholars deliver lectures on the life style of Prophet Mohammad. People get dressed and join this procession in the evening to enjoy the celebration of Prophet Muhammad.
Traditional food
As this day is considered as the most holy day for the Muslims hence they prepare variety of food dishes to enjoy the Birth day of their beloved Prophet Muhammad. There are dishes such as Mrouziya, Tabuli, Chicken/Mutton Biryani, Mutton Korma, haleem, kofta, shami kabab, dahi vada and kheer puri, This is a very fortunate day for the Muslims and this festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm and excitement. Muslims offers prayers and even recite Quran on this day.
