Important significance
Bhaiya Dooj is a very sacred festival of the Hindus that is celebrated on the fifth day of Diwali. This festival is devoted to the unique relationship between all the brothers and sisters in India. On this holy day brothers promise to protect their sister for the rest of the lives. This festival glorifies the most lovable relationship of a brother and a sister. On this auspicious day sister pray for their brothers. There is a very strong reason for calling this festival as Bhai Dooj; as it comes on the 2nd day after the new moon hence this day is called as Dooj and it is for the well fare of all the brothers called as 'Bhaiya or Bhai'. It is the day where sisters pray for their brothers long life.
History of Bhaiya Dooj
In Hindu religion all the festivals that are celebrated have some history behind them. This history not only provides the proper information about that festival but also gives knowledge of that festival. This plays a vital role in having proper knowledge about our customs and traditions.
As per the Hindu religious scriptures it is said that Yamaraj, known as the god of death, went to visit his sister Yami on this day after a long time.
After seeing his brother Yami was very touched and welcomed his brother putting vermilion on his brother's forehead. They both had their meal together and Yamaraj was pleased by his sister's respect and love and therefore decided to visit his sister every year on this day.
Legends say that Lord Krishna defeated and killed Narakasura, the Asuras king and went to meet her sister Subhadra. She welcomed him in a very traditional way by showing him light and then putting the vermilion (Tilak) on his forehead for protecting her.
Celebration of Bhaiya Dooj
On this fortunate day brothers visit their sister's place, sisters welcome their brothers by applying Tilak on their forehead, do Puja of their brother and offer sweet to eat. Putting that vermilion means that no one can cause any harm to their beloved brother. After doing Puja brothers offer gifts for their sister as a token of love. On this auspicious day brothers promise to protect their sister for their whole life.
Traditional food
Bhaiya Dooj is regarded as one of the most promising festivals for sisters and brothers. Sisters prepare dishes that are liked by their brother, there are some dishes that are liked by all the brothers such as pineapple salad, mango salad, Paneer simla, jeera rice, kaju Burfi and pista sondesh.
The essence of this festival is to strengthen the love bond between sister and brother.
