Significances

This is the most important religious festival celebrated by the Muslims all over India. In traditions it is said that each family should sacrifice a domestic animal such as the goat, sheep, camel and cow by killing. The meat of the animal is divided into three equal parts for distributing it to friends and family members. One thirds is distributed within relatives and friends, one third is distributed within poor as gift for them and the last part is kept for the family itself.

Legends say that thousands of years ago, the city of Mecca was dry and there was not even a single drop of water in the valley. God commanded prophet Ibrahim to bring Hajar with his child Ismael to Arabia from Palestine. After leaving Hajar and Ismael he was ready to return to Palestine, when Hajar asked who told him to leave us here, he replied Allah. Hearing this she told that then the almighty will not forget us. Ibrahim had provided Hajar and Ismael with lot of food and water but it got short very soon, after some time they both suffer from hunger.

Hajar was running between two hills in search of water that hills are called as Safa and Marwa. She ran for seven times between the hills finally she fainted next to her son and prayed to god for water. His son Ismael rubbed his leg on the ground and there was a spring of water coming out from the same place.

Another command from god to Ibrahim was that he should devote his dearest possession; his son to god. Hearing this Ibrahim prepared himself to sacrifice his son for Allah. Finally at the time of sacrifice he found a ship in the place of his son who was sacrificed. Allah told Ibrahim that his wish was already fulfilled. Muslim remembers this sacrifice, at the time of Id- ul - Adha.
