This is an ancient historic town with glorious past of the Sangan Age Poompuhar and it is located at the mouth of the Kaveri river. It is also well known as Kaveripoompattinam. It is located in Nagappattinam district in Sirkali Taluka.

Tourists generally take rest at Mayiladuthurai Junction and proceed to Poompuhar by road, those who visit this place from Chennai city by train can reach to Sirkali travelling by road. The distance in-between Poompuhar and Mayiladuthurai is just 24 kilometer, Sirkali is 21 kilometer.

In the first century AD, it had trading links with the romans and it was also visited by Buddhists from the east. Important port of Cholas, Poompuhar was lost under the sea. Ancient planned city is found in excavations and name Poompuhar has been adopted for Tamiinadu Government emporia throughout the country.
