Nagappattinam is a single district place with all its historical and cultural significance in the state. It is one of the constituents of Chola Mandalam and believed that was most popular among all the ancient Tamil Kingdoms. In Chola period its coastal town was the head-quarter.

Nagappattinam was also known by other name Cholakula Vallippattinam. The town reference is found in the 3rd Century BC Burmese historical text. The same place is referred as Padarithitha in ancient Buddhist literature. Pallava King Rajasimha in 690-728 BC allowed Chinese King to build a Buddha Vihar in Nagappattinam.

Buddha vihar built by Chinese existed in a Nagappattinam and this Buddha Vihar is called Subamanu Vihar.
