Kumbakonam is a busy capital of the Chola kings in historical days and the Kaveri River is just 37 kilometers away from Thanjavur. This place is better known for the various temples and colourful, beautiful sculptures and inside and outside carvings on those temples.
The most known temples are Kumbeshwara, Sarangapani and Nageshwara temple. After every 12 years once Kumbakonam celebrate the Mahamagam festival, when thousand of devotees visit this holy place with belief of dipping in the tank will wash all their sins.
This place got name like this from the legend, which says that Lord Shiva had broken a kumbh means water pot after it was brought here by a great flood, and it is believed that the same water from that pot is poured and filled the Mahamagam Tank.
