Gangaikondacholapuram was the capital of the Chola king Rajendra and this town of name means, the city of the Chola who conquered the Ganga. But now days all disappeared except the temple and the 5 kilometer long reservoir from 11th century.

The gopurams of this huge temple dominate the surrounding landscape and it is on a distance of 35 kilometers on the north of Kumbakonam. This temple was built by the Chola Emperor named Rajendra first in 1012-44. It is in Brihadishwara Temple style and here lord Shiva is worshiped.

In this temple various beautiful sculptures adds the attraction to the walls and the temple enclosures. The ornate tower in this temple is nearly 55 meter in height and 80 tone weight. Just after the temple, small museum is there but it is closed on Friday. It exhibits the remains of the palace.
