Kumbakonam on west side is a place called Dharasuram. It is a small town and here Airateshwara temple was built by Raja Chola second. This temple is excellent example of Chola architecture from 12th century.
The Archaeological Survey of India has restored this oldest temple and it is fronted by using same miniature sculptures. Row of large number of statues surrounding the temple was replaced with concrete statues and bricks in the 14th century.
Inside this holy temple there is a main shrine, with a very large decorated lingam standing near and the natural light is the only thing which illuminates it from morning till evening.
