Chidambaram was the capital of the Cholas since ad 907 to 1310 and it is 60 kilometers away from south of Pondicherry. It is most important holy towns in Tamilnadu and important pilgrim centers for Shaivites in India. It is also well known for famous Natraja Temple of 927-997 AD, which was built by Vira Chola Raja.

Temple complex of Nataraja, the dancing Shiva is best Dravidian architecture example found in Tamil Nadu. This is a town is surrounding the Nataraja Temple and got streets names after the cardinal points. It has very simple road maps and so it is easy for wondering in this place with all needed accommodations is available near the temple itself.

Nataraja Temple is the oldest temple found in South India and also very large in size, it is nearly of 13 hectares area and complex has four gopurams - towers of 49 meters height, with sculptured icons depict the Hindu myths.
