Amritsar

Now days Amritsar is the second largest town in Punjab and it is located at a distance of 24 kilometers from border of Pakistan. In the year 1948, during the violent disturbance happened at the time of the partition of India, Amritsar was the most terrible spot of such events which shook Punjab. Punjabis are having a great proud about this capital city as well as the very well known 'Golden Temple'.

How to go there

  • By Air : Amritsar is well connected by air with major cities in India like Delhi and Mumbai.
  • By Rail : Amritsar is also well connected by railways with the many major cities in India.

Amritsar : Places of Interest

  • Akal Takht

    Akal Takht is very adjacent to the Golden Temple. It is a marble paved square and where the Akal Takht means Immortal Throne is standing. It was established by one of the Sikh guru named Guru Hargobind in the year 1606 to 1645, one can consider it as the supreme seat of the Sikh religion authority.

    Now days it looks like the example of 18th and early 19th century building in mix, the upper storey is built by Ranjit Singh.

  • Baba Atal Rai Tower

    Baba Atal Rai tower is the octagonal and the nine storied tower which represents the nine years of the son of the sixth Guru Hargobindji, the Atal Rai. It has the inner walls decorated with frescoes and all are on the life of Guru Nanak. There is an Adi Granth enshrined within it.

    Central Sikh Museum

    Central Sikh museum is also very near to the Golden Temple. This museum houses the nice and old fine paintings of battles in-between Sikhs and the religious persecution, old manuscripts. One can also see the coins and some of the weapons of older times.

  • Golden Temple

    Golden temple of Amritsar is the holiest shrine of the Sikh religion and it is located in the centre part of old Amritsar. This temple is also known by the name Darbar Sahib or Hari Mandir. There is a pool with name Amrit Sarovar, and this is the reason why this town is named as Amritsar. This is very attractive temple as splendor in white and gold.

    This amazing temple is with four entrances and four opening, which indicates that there is entry for all people from any where of any religion. Across the water, there is a marble causeway and it leads to the shrine, in which glittering picture of shrine is reflected.
