Ratnagiri is the huge, stunning western shore region of Konkan. It is the birthplace of Bal Gangadhar Tilak, the great freedom fighter of India. This man with a duty led the "Swadeshi Movement" in opposition to the British during the Indian Independence Movement.
House of Tilak known as 'Tilak Smarak' is a familiar sight for many visitors visiting this place regularly. There are some other attractions like fire temple, which was built for non-Brahmin peoples by the famous revolutionary leader like Swatantryaveer Savarkar.
There is a 'Patil Pawan Mandir', the Coconut Beach Centre, the Bhatye beach and Bhagwati Bunder (harbor), Ratnadurg Fort with a seafood-processing centre at Mirya worth visiting. There is one more palace worth visiting and it is known with name 'Thebaw Palace', built in 1910 to 1911 for the exiled King and Queen of Burma, now known as Myanmar. They lived here till in death in the year 1916 for five years.
The Best Time To Visit Ratnagiri
One could have a trip to this place at any time during a whole year, but the best time to visit the place is in the month of March to June in a year. Being apart from beating off the city high temperature, one can enjoy and take pleasure in the well known 'Alphonso mangos', which is the specialty of this district. If it is not possible in the summer one can have a trip in the month of October to December as well.

- By Air - It has Kolhapur as the nearest airport and it is at a distance of 144 kilometers from this place.
- By Rail - Ratnagiri is at a distance of 50 kilometrs away from Ganpatipule, a cool Maharashtrian beach town.
In all four trains go to Ratnagiri from Mumbai via the central railway route.
- Madgaon Express - It has Departure Time 5.15 am and Arrival Time is 12.05 pm.
- Konkan Kanya - It has Departure time 22.30 pm and Arrival Time is 5.30 am., the next day morning.
- Kurla Netravati - It has Departure time 16.40 pm and Arrival Time is 23.05 pm.
- Manglore Kuria - It has Departure time 15.15 pm and Arrival Time is 21.35 pm.
- By Road - There are many direct buses available to Ratnagairi from Mumbai, at a distance of 375 kiometers away. It is at a distance of 331 kilometers from Pune and at a adistnace of 144 kilometers from Kolhapur. There are also the direct buses available from Panaji, Goa and many places to reach at Ratnagiri. Also the direct buses for Mumbai at 7.30 pm., for Pune at 8 pm. and for Goa at 6.15 am. is available.
