Panhala Fort

Panhala Fort is located near Kolhapur at a distance 19 km. This fort is one of the largest and significant fort among all the forts of deccan region. The fort balanced at an altitude of around 850 m above the sea level. Actually this fort is very large that is the perimeter of this fort is about 7.25 km. From perimeter you have got some idea about the large ness of the fort. The history of this fort is that the fort was built by King Bhoja between 1178 -1209. After that Yadava and Bahamani took control of this fort. In 1489, the fort was captured by the Adil Shahi family.

Points of Attraction:

Panhala fort had three huge double walled gates but now one can see only two gates there. Three huge granaries are in the fort complex. The Ganga Kothi is the largest among them. The area covered by Ganaga Kothi is about 950 sq m and is 10.7 m in height. At the west side of the fort there is an impressive structure of 'Teen Darwazaa'. Also there are number of tombstones which are not in good condition and still keep their majesty. Also there are number of forts such as Vishalgad, Mahipalgad, Kalanandigad.

How to go there:

As Kohlapur is strongly connected to all important cities so there is no problem to reach there. If you want to reach there with the help of road then the route is: First go to Bombay from Bombay to Kohlapur the distance is about 428 km. And then from Kohlapur the distance is just 19 km. From Kohlapur there are lots of buses and also the private vehicles are available. The nearest Railway station is Kohlapur. And the nearest airport is Kohlapur which at the distance of 18 km from the Panhala.
