Korlai and Khanderi Forts

Korlai Fort

The Korlai fort is in the Raigad District. The base village of the fort is Korlai. The height of this fort is about 2828 feet. The fort was buit by Portuguese in the year of 1521. For that Portuguese took a permission of Ahmednagar Sultan. In the peroid of Marathas that is in 1687, Sambhaji the son of Shivaji tired to capture fort but he failed. The fort was captured by Marathas in 1739. And the control of Marathas remains untills 1818.

The wall of this fort is about five feet and three inch. There are eleven gates out of which seven doors are inner and four doors are outer. The Santa Cruz named water cistern lies at the north side of the fort. San Diego and San Francisco are the two bastions and are on the west side of the fort. Also there are other bastions with name Sam Pedro, Sam Ignacio, Sam Philippe. All bastions have the name of saint. Also there is one church which was built in 1630.

If you want to visit this fort then go to Ratnagiri. As Ratnagiri is well connected with all important cities so there is no problem to reach there. Then go to Raigad and from Raigad go to Korlai which as at the base of fort.

Khanderi Fort
Khanderi fort Picture The fort is 20 km away from the coast of Mumbai and three to four km away form the Thai beach. The fort constructed on Small Island. Actually this fort was built in the year of 1678.

The various attempts made by British to imprison the Khanderi fort but fort was finally handed over to British as a part of the Peshawa territory and from that time it remains under the control of British for long time. Here is the picture of Khanderi fort.

Right now this fort is under the control of Bombay Port trust administration. Also there is a one lighthouse on the fort. If you want to visit this fort then it is compulsory to you to take a permission of Bombay port trust.
