Janjira Fort

The fort is located in the Raigad Distric and in Murud village. This Murud village contains lots of coconut and butel nut trees. This Murud village is not so big but still it is famous due to this impregnable fort Janjira. This Janjira fort is one of famous and important sea type fort. The fort is built inside the Murud village about 3 km. The Janjira Fort was built by the rulers of the Ahmed Nagar under the patronage of Emperor Malik Amber in the 15th century AD. The walls of this fort are 40 feet high and standing unbroken still after being tattered by the sea waves from all four sides. The main thing about this fort is that the fort was never occupied by any enemy for over 350 years. All Marathas, British, Peshaws tried to capture this fort but no one get success to capture it.

Points of Attraction:

The important thing about this fort is that fort is lies totally in water. And hence it becomes special than that of the other forts. The total space occupied by this fort is about 22 acres. There are number of turrets and 19 towers in the fort. Every tower has cannon on it and all of these cannons are in the ready state. Also there is other fort which was built by Shivaji Maharaj as a counterpart to a Janjira. The name of this fort is KasaPadmd urg and it is 2 kms away from the Janjira. Two water tanks and one deep well with cold and sweet water are lies inside this Janjira fort.

Way to reach there:

You can able to reach Murud via from Pune or via Mumbai. Both the cities are well connected by road, rail, and by air so, no problem to reach at Pune or Mumbai. From Mumbai to Murud the distance is about 165 kms and from Pune to Murud the distance is about 230 kms. Also there are Maharashtra state Tranport buses are available to Murud.
