Gawilghur and Kenjalgad Forts

Gawilghur Fort

The fort is located in Amravati District. In the Second war of the Anglo-Maratha the fort was successfully beaten by force commanded by Arthur Wellesley in 1803. The fort was built by ninth king of the Berar dynasty in 1425. The fort was returned to the Marathas after making peace with the British but they neglected it.

Points of Attraction:

There are number of Persian inscription which tells about the construction date of the seven gates. There are remains of mosque which are not in good condition. Also there are two water cisterns and is the main source of the drinkable water. The name of these two tanks is Devtalav and Khantalav. The mosque was built with the help of Pathan style of Architecture.

The main feature of this fort is that the tunnel which combines the two forts that is Narnala and this Gawilgarh. The distance between these two forts via tunnel is around the 20 miles. Also there are signs of gun that killed five attackers with a single shot.

How to go there:

Amravati is well connected to all important cities in Maharashtra state. So, there is no problem to reach at Amravati. There are number of buses available from Pune and Mumbai to Amravati.

Kenjalgad Fort

Kenjalgad fort is lies in Pune District of Maharashtra. Jambhali village is at the base of the fort. There is huge cave which has tunnel like shape. From the top this cave has an excellent look. The height of this fort is 4273 feet. And the grade of this fort is medium. If you want to want to visit this fort then follow the route as given below:

First go to Pune then from Pune catch the bus of any one of the Titeghar or Korle or Ambavde. And get down at Machi which at 5 kms. Then the top is reached via a broad rock staircase.
