  • Chanderi Fort

    Chanderi fort is situated in Chanderi town in Ashokanagar district of Madhya Pradesh state. It is one of the most striking monuments in the town. It is situated at 127 kilometers distance from Shivpuri, 45 kilometers from Esagarh and 37 kilometers from Lalitpur. The fort is rested on southwest hill of Betwa river.

    The Chanderi fort is encircled by forests, hills and lakes. It has many monuments of Bundela Rajputs and the Malwa Sultans.

    Chanderi Fort was built in Mughal Period. It is said that the Muslim rulers constructed the defense walls of fort. However the palaces or Mahals in fort were constructed by Bundela Rajputs.

    The fort has 3-gates. The main gate is called Khooni Darwaza. The name has been given because each criminal was thrown from the walls above and his body smashed into pieces below. Hawa Paur is the topmost gate of the fort.

    Chanderi fort includes palaces/mahals - Nau Khanda Mahal and Hawa Mahal. These palaces were constructed by Bundela. Another gate on the fort is Khatti ghatti on southwest of fort.

    How to reach the fort :

    • Bus service is available from Gwalior, Indor, Bhopal, Jhansi, Shivpuri, Sanchi, Lalitpur and Vidisha.
    • Chanderi fort is at about 38 kilometers distance from Lalitpur, Lalitpur is at 90 kilometers from Jhansi.
    • Jhansi can be easily reached by railway. It is located in Delhi–Bombay-Madras route.
    • Bhopal and Gwalior are the nearest air ports and are at distance of 258km and 259 kms respectively.
    • From airport, you can hire cars or take bus.
