Since the ancient times only this district place is with the significant role in the politics of Southern India. It was the capital of Kochi State once and captured by Portuguese and the Dutch. Raja Rama Varma was the architect of this Thrissur town.

Now days numerous festivals and art schools with different art institutions are present here. Thrissur is world known for Pooram festival held in the month of April and May. Elephant Owners Association is unique thing one can notice about this place and its particularly done on annual Pooram.
