Kollam is one of the main centres of the cashew trading and processing industry in India. It is also believed that the Malayalam era is actually stated from founding of Kollam. Southern gateway to the backwaters of Kerala is Kollam and it is mostly known for Kollam-Alappuzha backwater cruise.

In the 9 century Kollam became the Venad Kingdom's capital. Extensive astronomical calculations are done and then the new era was established and it is started on 15 August 825 AD. This place is also associated with history of Christianity.

It is the oldest port on the Malabar Coast and it was the port of international spice trade at some time. Kollam is located on the side of the Asthamudi Lake and known to Marco Polo as Koilum. This beautiful place is surrounded by coconut palms and cashew plantations.

Kollam is still sometimes referred as Quilon, which is a very busy Keralian market town. Eight-hour boat trip between Alappuzha and Kollam is longer one and most beautiful experience of backwaters of Kerala.

By Air - Thiruvananthapuram is nearest airport from Kollam.

By Rail - By rail Kollam is reached from Ernakulam, Guruvayoor, Bangalore, Cannanore, Chennai, Kanyakumari, Madurai, Mangalore, Shornur, Thiruvananthapuram and Mumbai, New Delhi.

By Road - It is well connected by buses from most of the cities in India.
