Karnataka has many important pilgrimage sites and Udipi is one of these for sure. It is also known for the birthplace of the saint Madhava in 12th century. The Madhava saint set up eight different 'Sannyasi maths', monasteries in this town.
Udipi is at a distance of just 58 kilometers from the Mangalore city as well as from the coastal road. The leader Madhvacharya from 13th century, founder of Dvaita philosophy, built this temple for living and arid preaching here and this temple is then onwards known as Krishna Temple.
This Krishna temple is also a great attraction of tourists in this pilgrim. There is a Malpe beach, a main spot to visit in this area and continues boats are running to St. Mary's Island daily, it was the Vasco da Gama's first landfall in India.
There is Manipal University at a distance of 5 kilometers from Udipi, this university is very well known for the dance and drama school Yakshgana in Karnataka state and Kasturba Medical College with Anatomy Museum. Here is a grand biennial festival known as Paryaya held in January and it is the marking of the change.
