Karkala is only 17 kilometers away from Mudabidri. It is renowned for the 42 feet tall monolithic Gomateswara, which has been recently flood lit. Recently Ranjal Gopal Shenoy, who is the famous sculptor, has left a tradition of art of engraving.
The statues made in this place are shipped to Japan. This statue is on a small, serene hillock on the outskirts of the town. St. Lawrence Church in Karkala also attracts many devotees; they may be of any religion and castes. There are many beautiful views of Western Ghats to enjoy.
In all four ornate entrances are available to enter the shrine and so it is known as 'Chaturmukha Basti'. On it a splendid work by the devout Jaini kings is done.
The other famous monuments in thsi place includes many several temples and bastis, St. Lawrence church. Ananthasayana and Venkataramana temples are dedicated to god Vishnu and also mainly attracting the number of devotees here.
