Nicobar Islands

Nicobar Islands is comprising of total 28 islands and the Nicobar group of islands is isolated from the Andamans by the Ten Degree Channel. These all islands have palm around these and coconut and casuarinas trees as well surrounding them. Great Nicobar is one of the the largest island of this group and it is a Pygmalion Point and now it is called by a name of Indira Point. It is the southern most tip of the islands. This islands includes Katchal, wher one can see the large rubber plantation, Campbell Bay and Nancowry harbor.

Car Nicobar

Car Nicobar is the north most islands in the Nicobar group. It has a significant tribal population and it lives in distinctive huts, the huts are of shape like large thatched domes. Huts are raised on stilts of 2 meter height and are entered through the floor. The Nicobarese mostly like wrestling, but they are well known for music love they have. Many time the villages from thsi place enjoy participating in the various traditional unaccompanied singing and dancing competitions on every festival day.

In Nicobar also many other islands provide camping facilities at very few rates in the month of October and May each year and it is totally depend on the current weather conditions at that time ad at that place.

Trekking

Certain trekking routes in Nicobar are mainly known for the nature lovers and they can enjoy lovely natural trekking event here. One of the prominent trekking rouue is the running between Madhuban to Mt. Harriet. Andaman Teal House is the center to get the trekking equipment and tents for the visitors.

Nicobar is situated in between the sea route from the South India to Sri Lanka. Many visitors call this place as the land of the nake means Nakkavar. One can now think from this name the actual name Nicobar generated. In the medieval Arabic name Lankhabatus is misprouncentation of the name Nankakar or Nakkavar.

The epic hero of Ramayana is Lord Rama and it is supposed that he have been passed through this islands in the era of his exile. Kathasaritsagar of Somdev from the 11th century specified Nicobar Islands as the Narikel Dweep. This place is also mentioned in many books of travelers namely Fahien from sixth century), Ptolemy from second century and Marco Polo from 13th century and many more.

Also the islands were acknowledged in China with a name 'Lo-Jan Kuo' means the land of the naked people. Also there is writing from 1059 AD of the Chola King of Tanjore specified information about this place as the islands were used in those days as the base shelter station for waging war as well as for keeping the command over South-East Asia.

It is very difficult to understand the geographical names of all the islands and these all names have complex and exciting histories, while, every island has a local name also.

Car Nicobar is one of the extraordinarily flat islands excluding for few cliffs on the north side with little hilly regions in the interior side of it. This place is also surrounded by silvery seashore as well as the areas of flat land containing the coralline diluvium.

The hilly terrain Nancowry and Kamorta are covered with grass in the form of rising and falling meadows. There is an Empress Peak and it is nearly 1.420 feet high and it also one of the highest in Kamorta. Nancowry harbour has two entrances located the east and west respectively.
