Bassein Beach:

Bassein beach is located in the Thane district of Maharashtra state, India. Bassein is the Portuguese name of village whose original name was Vasai. Therefore the beach is also known as Vasai Beach. Bassein is around 60 kms from Thane.

Bassein is a quite a historical town. The town was ruled by Portuguese people. Portuguese built fort here which is known as Vasai fort. What we now see are the remains of the fort. It was used as a ship building center in the early 17th century by them. In 1739 it was captured by Marathas the local rulers. You can still sense the hint of Portuguese culture over this town. Bassein provides you the beautiful fusion of natural beauty with historical and religious significance.

The beach is quite calm and less crowded as compared to other beaches of Thane. Bassein Beach is famous for one day picnics as it is just 2 hours by road from Thane. The beach has smooth white sand. Palm and coconut trees surrounding the beach on Eastern side adds up to the beauty. The sea water is quite deep here. Therefore the beach is not that advisable for swimming. But the beach is ideal to lie down in sand and relax yourself. In the morning you can also see people having sunbath here. Sunset view from this beach is a treat.

You can pamper your taste buds with the local food you get here which includes different types of chat items, corns and tender coconut water. Couples also come here for the moon light walk. Now a days Bassein is getting developed as tourists spot.

  • Vasai fort is an amazing example of a sea fort.
  • There are as many old churches of the Portuguese era.
  • Nalasopara which is around 10 kms away from Bassein was the capital of Konkan from 1500 BC to 1300 AD. It is believed to be the Gautam Buddha's birthplace in his previous incarnation. There are many Buddhist relics in Nalasopara which are worth visiting.
  • Coin museum at Nalasopara.
  • Akoli and Ganeshpuri hot springs.
  • Samrudhi Nityanand Maharaj Samadhi and other ashrams at Ganeshpuri.

How to reach Basselin Beach?

  • By Road: Bassein is very well connected by road. You have to take Thane- Ahamadabad national highway. There is an exit for Vasai from highway.
  • By Rail: Vasai Road station of Western railway is the nearest railway head and it is just 3 kms from the beach. Rail is the fastest transport which will get you here.
  • By Air: Thane airport is the nearest airport.

  • Bassein is a nice place to stay. There are number of lodges available.
  • You can also hire sea side row houses on rent.
  • Also as Thane is just 60 kms, you can stay in Thane where you can have number of options for lodging.
