It has a thunderous sea to the west, mountains to the east and the huge coconut and areca groves are the main attraction of the beach. The temple on the hillock attracts many devotees and tourists towards itself. Apart from the temple cape at murudeshwar the sea is the second most attractive place. The temple is on the small hill called as the kanduka giri which is surrounded by the sea. The Mysore ruler tipu sultan renovated the gigantic fort. During the time of Vijayanagar empire in the 16th century Bhatkal beach was considered as the most important port.

There are two interesting temple worth visiting - the Vijayanagar temple built-in the 17th century with animal carving of the Vijayanagar time and the Jain chadranatha basadi. Water sports activities are carried here as the sea waves are very calm and gentle. Swimming, boating and sun-bath are the center of attraction. For those tourists who are beach lovers will get to see a breathtaking view of sunrise and sunset. Tourist interested in having a walk on the beach, morning is the best time for relaxing while having a leisure walk.

There are many unspoiled beaches, and the elegant mosques with typical architecture which takes back date to history. The nawayath Muslim community has come into existence from Bhatkal city itself. The famous classical architecture mosques are jamia masjid, khalifa masjid and the noor masjid. Bhatkal beach has an old lighthouse which is located on the hillock, from here splendid view of sea can be seen. The most attention-grabbing place is the wharf where colorful boats always arriving and departing from the port.

  • By air:

    The nearest airport is the Mangalore airport 160 kilometers, and Bangalore 520 kilometers in Karnataka state. But the Goa airport is 220 kilometers and tourists prefer to travel by air for reaching the murudeshwar beach.

  • By rail:

    Bhatkal is the main railway station as it is the main konkan railway line connecting all the Mumbai and Mangalore trains.

  • By road:

    Bhatkal is well-connected to all the major cities like Bangalore-520 kilometers, karwar-126 kilometers and mangalore-60 kilometers.

  • Best time to visit:

    Best time to visit Bhatkal beach is from August to March as during this time there is cool winds blowing along the seashore. As it is the pilgrim place there are numbers of devotees coming here with their families to visit the Shiva temple and to have a vacation on the beach.
